Avara Foods: Reporting health and safety issues faster
Avara Foods, one of the UK’s largest food businesses, was the first K2 customer in the U.K. and has been implementing solutions with the platform for 20 years. Three workflows built in the mid-2000s are still running today. Recently, the company has acquired multiple businesses, so the K2 platform is helping the Avara team develop apps that streamline disparate processes across multiple sites, including a new suite of health and safety apps that ensure they meet stringent compliance requirements.
Previous processes around health and safety were all paper-based. If an employee saw a potential hazard in a building or on a farm, they may not be in a position to find and fill out a paper form to report the issue or know what location to bring it to afterward. Once a form did arrive on the proper desk, it had to be scanned and emailed, which didn’t offer any traceability.
Today, forms are provided via a mobile app and automatically routed to the right person for review, with data available for anyone to analyze. According to Marc Atkins, Senior Business Analyst at Avara Foods:
“The ability to identify and record these things using the mobile app has been a fantastic benefit to us. The consistency with the data is brilliant and the visibility as well. So you’re no longer waiting for a form to arrive at your desk. With K2, we've been able to automate all of that and also have traceability to see this form went from person A to person B.”
Ballast Nedam: Collecting data, no matter the weather
Ballast Nedam, one of the largest construction companies in the Netherlands, has a number of quality and safety procedures it needs to follow, and a lot of this information capturing has to be done in the field. However, a lot of procedures were paper-based, which created problems when the weather made paper forms difficult to manage outdoors. Moreover, the company wanted to become a learning organization, analyzing data to continuously improve safety and quality, but this was difficult without structured data capabilities.
With K2, Ballast Nedam is able to put data first. Mobile apps are available offline and the company is able to learn from the structured data collected from these K2 SmartForms. The developers have given end-users the power to create their own forms with reusable components, giving IT the chance to focus on high-value business requests, applying new features in just a few short days.
The company’s Q2Field solution won K2’s Most Innovative Use of K2 Platform award in 2019. According to Mark Den Heijer, Project Consultant and Developer at Ballast Nedam:
“We have a solution that works on mobile devices offline, without any internet, capturing all the information in fields and sending it back to the K2 server to our structured database. Now we can become the learning organization we were aiming for.”
Euro Caps: Delivering quality products efficiently
Euro Caps produces 3 million disposable coffee capsules per day and shows no signs of slowing, with a growing product line and workforce. Before implementing K2, the company realized it was outgrowing existing processes. Documents and spreadsheets were shared by email, often with multiple versions of the same file. There were numerous ways to collect data, and spreadsheets were difficult to maintain.
With the K2 platform, Euro Caps has automated a variety of key internal processes across the business, eliminating paper-based tasks and simplifying data. The company has been able to achieve better product quality with four integrated K2 applications for approving new suppliers, creating a new commodity item, validating the combination of materials and approving new products. These ensure new suppliers and materials are thoroughly evaluated so changes do not adversely impact quality standards.
Rick van Dijk, Application Specialist at Euro Caps, explains that the business is moving forward with new solutions that advance the business even further.
“With the K2 platform, we’ve built more than 25 K2 solutions in two years that simplify our data collection and streamline our processes from the shop floor to the boardroom. Currently, we're on our way to create even more that further improves the business and the quality of both our solutions and the products.”
